Chad’s presentation is Dignified Environments are for Everyone: Two Charter Schools’ Contrasting Color Strategies
”Color plays a vital role in our response to our surroundings. Our approach to color elevates the everyday experience of the students and their teachers to provide a new sense of dignity and purpose. In this presentation, we show how two very different Charter Schools for whom we were gut renovating spaces in New York City participated fully in our color inquiries, with great results.”

What is a Vibrant, Healthy Community?
AIA CES: 2 LU | 2 HSW
When: December 1, 2015 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Where: At The Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, New York NY
What are the criteria by which we evaluate whether a neighborhood is vibrant and healthy? What are the key levers impacting communities and how do we interpret this data to effect change?
On the occasion of the exhibition, Designing Affordability: Quicker, Smarter, More Efficient Housing Now, The Center for Architecture and the Institute for Public Architecture will convene a panel to look at what affordability means in a much broader context, beyond mere housing and to questions of living. Together we will examine how affordability, health, job opportunities, local economies, and accessibility impact the vibrancy and health of a neighborhood and contribute to longer-term structures of cost savings.
St. John's University
"I had the pleasure of working with Smith & Architects on some very exciting projects, and would strongly recommend to any client. They always showed a clear understanding of project deliverables, and were instrumental in providing creative design ideas. They worked very well with the client management team, and were patient with multiple design changes. They met major milestone dates for deliverables, and were able to provide details and buildable documents. They exhibited good technical and building code knowledge."
- Dejan Ilich, former Project Director for Design and Construction at St. John’s University
It has been a great pleasure working with your firm. You have a great sense of design and understand the goals and objectives of St. John's. Our students love the newly created labs, and your creativity with the Marillac Hall project has been a great success! Looking forward to working together again in the near future!"
- Ibi Yolas, Assistant Vice President Facilities Department, Design and Construction at St. John’s University
Academy of the City Charter School
“Like almost every grant-funded construction project I've worked on, what first seemed like a luxurious timeframe ultimately became a time and budget nightmare. Smith & Architects not only saved the day, but did so in a way that kept everyone calm and focused. We're thrilled with the result, and the kids who go to our school (and their parents!) are thrilled, too.”
- Steve Zimmerman, Founder/Board Member & Founder, Open Schools Project & Academy of the City Charger School
“Smith & Architects were extremely easy to work with on our school renovation. They listened and worked collaboratively with our school as well as working within our tight schedule and timeframe. We are very happy with their work and intend to work with them on Phase II renovations for our school in the near future.”
- Richard Lee, Principal, Academy of the City Charter School
Barry’s Bootcamp TriBeCa
“Barry's Bootcamp Tribeca has helped generate revenue not only as a second location doubling possible attendance, but has also become a beautiful space at which TV shows and magazine photographers are able to regularly shoot, improving the image of our brand on a national level. The exposure on such a major Avenue, with such high visibility and impressive architectural detail, has increased brand recognition exponentially on a local level.”
- Joey Gonzalez, Chief Executive Officer
“Instructors are always excited to work in this brand new store thanks to the incredible new design features which include a useful suspension system.”
- Joey Gonzalez, Chief Executive Officer
“We've noticed employees look forward to working in this brand new beautiful space. The high windows and large amounts of light seem to put everyone in a great mood.”
- Joey Gonzalez, Chief Executive Officer
“This particular location has really raised a bar in what we expect for future locations. Our franchisees have flown in from all over the World to see and experience it firsthand.”
- Joey Gonzalez, Chief Executive Officer

Their expertise in their field and their excellent business practice has made the experience of working with Smith & Architects incredible. Even when we do not know how to articulate what our needs and wants are for our building, they are able to understand our desires and deliver on what matters most to us.”
